ANEB Quebec’s mission is to help everybody touched by eating disorders. To carry out this mandate we offer various services. Please note that all our services are offered in French and in English.


Help and referral line

The help and referral line offers help to people directly affected by an eating disorder, families and friends, community workers and health professionals. You can get in touch with someone at ANEB between 9 am and 5 pm from Monday to Friday and from Monday to Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m at (514) 630-0907 or 1 800 630-0907.
 
Our staff and volunteers can help you to break the isolation by talking about the suffering and difficulties you face daily.


Open groups (OG)

This service offers prompt help to those who suffer from eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder) and an obsession with thinness, as well as to relatives and friends. This service is provided free of charge, without waiting lists. You do not need to confirm your presence.

Who can participate in the ANEB Quebec’s support groups?
The open group for people living with eating disorders is a confidential place to share and listen with respect to others who are in a similar situation. The exchanges break the isolation surrounding eating disorders by facilitating the expression of feelings. The OG is offered to people 17 years of age or older.

For people who wish to participate in an OG in French you can go the Sainte-Justine Hospital, on the 9th floor, Marcelle-Lacoste Room. This group is offered every Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

For those who are more comfortable with the English language, you can attend the session at the West Island Community Resource Centre (old Valois train station) located at 114 Donegani Ave. in Pointe-Claire. This group meets every second Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Schedule of the English open group for people with an eating disorder.

The OG for families and friends are an opportunity to meet with other people who are in the same situation, and to better understand the illness as well as the diverse symptoms and behaviors associated with eating disorders.

People who wish to attend a GO session in French can visit the Women’s Y located at 1355 René-Lévesque boulevard West (room 419). This group meets every second Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Schedule of the French open group for parents and loved ones.

Closed support group

If you believe you are suffering from anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder, or have an obsession with food, and you are ready to start a journey to recovery, we believe that this closed support group can help you. Within our support groups, we promote an environment where you will feel safe, understood, and accepted, which can only help make your task easier. ANEB groups provide assistance and give you the opportunity to talk confidentially with people who understand the eating disorder that is affecting your life. Our approach will provide tools to allow you to regain control.

Who are ANEB Quebec closed groups intended for?
Closed support groups are intended for people 17 years of age or older who are struggling with an eating disorder or a weight obsession. They are of pre-determined duration, depending on the group (Level I, Level II, Sexuality, Nutrition, and Arts), and take place once a week at the same time and place. They are composed of a group of approximately 10 participants, which does not change during the program. Participating in a closed group requires a commitment on your part. You must be able to participate in each of the sessions and plan your schedule accordingly.

LEVEL I

The level I closed support group aims at better understanding eating disorders and provides information on their causes, consequences, and treatments. This group suggests tools to help you better manage your emotions and the situations that may arise. It discusses topics like conflict resolution, body image, irrational ideas, emotions, self-esteem, and family and interpersonal relations. It also offers the possibility of communicating with the rest of the group and asking questions to our specialists, a nutritionist and a sex therapist.

LEVEL II

The level II closed support group aims at maintaining the progress made during the Level I group by furthering your knowledge on certain topics. This group is intended to provide you with tools, and focuses more on your responsibilities. It discusses themes such as intimacy, body image, communication, stress, and procrastination.

To register for a Level II closed group, you must have participated in a Level I closed group beforehand.

NUTRITION

The Nutrition closed group aims at providing information on nutrition in relation with eating disorders. This group allows participants to explore and understand their relation with food. Strategies to alter unhealthy behaviours are also discussed.

To register to the Nutrition closed group, you must have participated in a Level I closed group beforehand.

SEXUALITY

The Sexuality closed group aims at promoting sexual and interpersonal growth for people with eating disorders. This group discusses topics like sex myths, body image, abandonment, pleasure, and intimacy.

To register to the Sexuality closed group, you must have participated in a Level I closed group beforehand.

ART

The Arts closed group aims at helping you overcome your eating disorder through a variety of vehicles, including charcoal, ink, acrylic, pastels, water colours, clay, or play dough.

To register to the Art closed group you must have participated in a Level I closed group beforehand.


Newsletter images
The newsletter “images” is published quarterly and is distributed to more than 300 members. This newsletter gives you information about activities organized by ANEB, as well as it offers relevant information concerning eating disorders.

You can read the different articles on our website or you can also receive the newsletter by becoming a member. You simply need to complete the membership form in the members section on the website.


Prevention activities : kiosks and conferences

ANEB Quebec provides a prevention and awareness program through information stands and conferences in elementary and high schools, youth centres, cegeps, community centres, etc.

Here are the activities that we offer according to your needs, your interests and the time that you have.

Counselor training

The training offered by ANEB aims at promoting eating disorder awareness among counselors. It provides information regarding eating disorders, their causes, how to recognize them, as well as how-to’s for acting and communicating with this clientele. We offer you the training content and schedule. The training can be adapted to the specific needs of your environment.
